Hello again... This week, David Cameron struggled to stay awake.

Or at least that was the impression he gave having endured a Budget delivered, he said, with "all the excitement of a telephone directory".

So we hope to do better in keeping him interested and alert when we catch up with the Conservative leader at his Spring Conference in Newcastle.

A city shaken by the Northern Rock debacle and - to judge from the absence of Tory councillors or MPs there - still sceptical of what Mr Cameron's Conservatives have to offer.

So will green taxes or tax cuts prove the more popular policy?

And we explore whether he's in danger of talking down the economy with his talk of "a mess"... "no room for manoeuvre"... and "a dreadful predicament".

Is he Cassandra when the country needs Corporal Jones?

In this of all weeks, is this doom-laden talk just not very British?

Overseas adoption

That essence of Britishness, the stiff upper lip, has been on universal display it seems among families trying to adopt children from abroad.

It is a long, slow process at the best of times - but we have been inundated with messages this week from parents whose patience has finally worn thin.

And their battle is not with foreign bureaucrats as you might expect but with civil servants back home.

They accuse the Government's overseas adoption department of being unfit for purpose: slow, uncaring and unresponsive.

We examine why they want to hive the whole system away from Whitehall.
