An autumn election could be "the worst in living memory", according to John Turner, the Chief Executive of the Association of Electoral Administrators.

Mr Turner, who represents election officials around the country, said that with an autumn election "nobody sitting in my situation could guarantee that it will be less than trouble-free".

He said there would be problems with postal voting, where the lessons from May's elections have not yet been put into effect; with the new constituency boundaries and with electoral software could create "a real logistical nightmare".

But Mr Turner particularly pointed to the new electoral register as a potential problem.

He confirmed that the new register does not come into effect until 01 December, meaning the disruption could affect up to one million people who have moved house or changed their details.

Also on the Politics Show, Scotland's First Minister, Alex Salmond, said he thought Gordon Brown would find it hard to avoid a General Election.

He said: "Once you start these things running they're ticklish difficult to stop, and I think the momentum towards an election may be virtually unstoppable, so it may be that the Prime Minister ends up his own flagpole."

He said he thought the Prime Minister had originally started the speculation "as a bit of a wheeze, to discomfort the Conservatives" and joked that he was sure the Prime Minister was "pondering only the national interest this weekend".

Meanwhile William Hague, the Shadow Foreign Secretary, told the Politics Show that the Conservatives were ready for an election.

He said: "We certainly have the funding in place, the candidates in place, and we're ready with the policies for that election.

"And this week we are giving some illustrations of the policies and showing the clear direction of the party, so we are genuinely ready."
