A senior Liberal Democrat has told the Politics Show that he is disappointed with the leadership of Sir Menzies Campbell.

Lord Rodgers, a former Lib Dem leader in the House of Lords, said: "I think he's a very able and intelligent man and he's very good on foreign affairs, and I always want to listen to him and I respect what he's going to say, but he's had a very difficult task and some people are disappointed."

Asked by Jon Sopel whether he was himself disappointed, Lord Rodgers answered: "I suppose I am. But I still hope he will really make a big mark because the next election's only two years on."

Lord Rodgers also expressed concern about the party's performance over the part year has been disappointing.

"There is a feeling there's a lack of energy and perhaps an absence of direction," he said, "so I very much hope that the conference will be rather different and change the mood and be more positive than I think it's been."

The party's Schools and Families spokesman, David Laws, told Jon Sopel that Sir Menzies was not the "slightest bit in danger", and that "the overwhelming majority of the party are very strongly behind him."

He added: "You can always find noises off, mumbles and grumbles about particular things."
