 | Challenge to apply unchanging Labour values in a fast changing world |
The Labour Party has been part of my life for as long as I can remember, and its values and politics have been an inspiration to me.
I am immensely proud to have the chance to serve in this Government, and together we have achieved a great deal over these nine years, both nationally and in Leeds.
And in international development, we have shown beyond doubt that Labour politics really does change lives.
Coalition crucial
Building a progressive coalition across the Party, and in the country, has been critical to all of this.
But there is much still to be done, not least to ensure that all parts of our community are able to share in prosperity.
And as we have throughout our history, Labour must now look to the future.
The challenge is to apply our unchanging Labour values in a world that is itself changing fast before our eyes.
In facing up to this future, I think the Party will continue to need a Deputy Leader who offers honest advice and leadership, ensures that the voice of the members and affiliated unions is heard in government, works with all colleagues and listens to their views, and who carries forward the fight for social justice and peace in the world, knowing that we achieve most when Labour works alongside the people.
