As a local Councillor I feel very strongly that the Environment agency and the other QUANGO's have over-ridden the local government processes of decision-making and have ignored the views of local residents and businesses who have voiced their concerns over the impact to the local economy and also the quality of life of visitors to the area from the impact of flooding the Cuckmere Valley. Our electorate expect local Councillors to have the main say in determining local issues, or at least to be able to lobby (say) politicians further up the decision-making procedure. But as far as the EA and other organisations like English Nature are concerned, it appears are ignored.
Councillor Bob Brown, Sussex

Abolish SEERA The Socialist Republic of Guildford Unelected, unrepresentative playthings of this Government making decisions on our behalf.
Anon.

Government is a complex business-what the issue surely is not quangos but how decisions are arrived at-look at the leaks about the Princess Royal closure-35,000 people have now signed the petition-what happens if no listens-perhaps the answer is a whole new unitary organisation for overseeing of Local Public Services replacing local government and nhs pcts.
Sarah Knight, Felbridge nr East Grinstead.

I do not like all these Quangos but they seem to be run by qualified people-what is the alternative Local Councillors or directly elected NHS Trusts? That would be even worse-councillors are even less capable often-perhaps the answer is people having a direct say in who gets appointed to Quangos but leaving them in place. .
Penny Marshall, Tandridge-Surrey

I live in South Havering which has been designated as part of the Thames Gateway regeneration who's planning is now decided by the Quango known as the LTDGC. So far this Quango has not acted in the best interests of local people as it has approved a Gasification Plant and an Incinerator which was previously refused by the Local Council. It claims that these so called industries would provide much need jobs into the area, but these would be minimal in numbers compared to a good quality regeneration Scheme such as a Casino for which the local council put in a strong bid. This Scheme would have provided well into a excess of 1500 jobs and cleaned up a area which for years has been abused by being used for Dirty Industries which in turn have demeaned an area which was once had a Riverside beach. Rainham is the last remaining Village in East London and should be protected from being turned into an Urban Ghetto Its charm should be inhanced rather than be abused. In short if what I have seen this Quango offer so far in what is their Idea of Regeneration I don't hold out much hope for our local communities future..
Wendy Buck

The problem is not Quangos but accountability they must have public approval through referendums for their decisions which would sort out accountability-if the princess royal is downgraded without approval people will take to the streets .
Mike, East Grinstead

Get rid of regional assemblies. We did not vote for them. They are an instrument of the government of Europe. The people still need a voice .
Jean, Kent

The entire system needs a vast overhaul we need quangos to be disbanded and county and district councils need to remove cabinet systems so we have a proper elected authority with elected representatives who are community minded people who will support the electorate. We need more community services especially for our young offenders there are people with mental health and drug related conditions who are in prison as a result of failing mental health services eg Hastings where mental health services are failing. .
Lord Bret McLean

How do you get a job as a quango? Do tell? .
Anon

Why don't the Government re-open Aldington prison which caters for 200 prisoners. It's left standing empty but well maintained. .
Gerald Causer, Aylesham
