What is the outlook for Maori culture in New Zealand? |
In a Hardtalk Extra interview broadcast on Friday 6 May, Gavin Esler spoke to Witi Ihimaera, one of New Zealand's best-known authors.
Witi Ihimaera is perhaps best known as the author of the award-winning film Whale Rider, in which a young New Zealand Maori girl battles against tradition to emerge as a leader of her tribe.
Ihimaera's writing is a symbol of the richness, diversity and depth of post-colonial literature and also of its dilemmas.
Maori culture may have survived the colonial era, but how does he see it changing in the face of globalisation?
And what lessons does he believe the Maori people can teach other indigenous peoples?
HARDtalk Extra can be seen on Fridays on BBC World at 03:30 GMT, 08:30 GMT, 15:30 GMT, 18:30 GMT and 23:30 GMT.
It can also be seen on BBC News 24 at 04:30 and 23:30
