What damage could mining be costing the environment?
Sir Robert Wilson, Executive Chairman, Rio Tinto talks to Tim Sebastian about whether there is a conflict between the demands of running a global company to make a profit, and protecting the environment.

Multi-national companies could come in for a rough ride at The World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg.

Also known as the WSSD, (World Summit on Sustainable Development), it runs from 26 August to 4 September.

The environmental lobby and many developing nations have hit out at multi-national companies saying they extract huge amounts of natural resources with scant regard for the environment and the plight of the poor.

Concerns are also being expressed that any sustainable development agreements will be voluntary allowing big companies to escape tighter controls.

Rio Tinto is one of the world's largest mining companies with 61 operations across 20 countries.

Its executive chairman, Sir Robert Wilson, will be at the summit.

Tim Sebastian asks him whether big business should be doing more in spreading their wealth and helping the environment.

The interview can be watched in full on Tuesday 27 on BBC World and BBC News 24 at the following times:
