For years the township was synonymous with uprising and resistance, as its majority black population fought against the policies of apartheid.
Even after the victories of the anti-apartheid struggle, it was plagued by grinding poverty and crime.
But now it is trying to attract people interested in bungee jumping, tandem bike tours, and shopping.
