| Sunday, 6 May, 2001, 12:24 GMT 13:24 UK 29th April 2001 Sunday 29th April 2001 on BBC 1 On the programme today, Former South African President Nelson Mandela who was in Britain to celebrate free South Africa, spoke to Sir David Frost about the concert in his honour and his support of President Thabo Mbeki during the current difficult situation in Zimbabwe. Home Secretary Jack Straw defended the government's record on asylum seekers. He accused William Hague's party of taking an "absolutely disreputable"stance that would do nothing to tackle the problem. He also denied Conservative claims that Britain had become a "soft touch" for illegal immigrants. Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone told the programme how Mayday demonstrators were intent on repeating acts of violence carried out last year. He also said that the demonstration planned for Tuesday would do nothing to help the issues of Third World debt and the environment. Livingstone also urged ministers to end the wrangle over the London Underground by handing control to him and leader of the Transport Commision Bob Kiley. Composer Tim Rice reviewed the day's newspapers with Andrea Corr, lead singer of Corrs, who are also due to perform at the concert in Trafalgar Square, in honour of Nelson Mandela. Meanwhile political impressionist Rory Bremner added his satirical humour to the programme.
