| Sunday, 18 February, 2001, 11:17 GMT 11th February 2001 Sunday 11th February 2001 on BBC 1 On Breakfast with Frost today, Former Israeli Leader Shimon Peres confirmed that he was considering whether to accept a position in Ariel Shiron's new government. He said he would join a government of National Unity if it would help relaunch the peace process in the Middle East. Also on the programme this morning; the Chief of Defence Staff, General Sir Charles Guthrie. He said President Bush was certain to push through the "star wars" National Missile Defence system, but said he was worried about how much it would cost Britain to join in...and what would have to be sacrifices to pay for it. The Education Secretary, David Blunkett, joined David Frost to discus Labour's five year strategy to drive up standards in secondary schools. This involves creating hundreds more "specialist" schools - the full details will be announced in The Commons tomorrow. John Redwood MP and The German Ambassador HE Dr Hans Friedrich von Ploetz discussed European issues with Sir David. John Redwood argued the case for re-negotiating Britain's role in Europe and the Ambassador spoke of his support for the Prime Minister's announcement in the House of Commons on Wednesday for a decision, early in the next parliament, on whether to hold a referendum on joining the Euro. Sunday Times journalist, Simon Jenkins reviewed the Sunday Newspapers with actress Amanda Donahoe, who will be starring in The Graduate at the Gielgud Theatre from February 12th.
