On Breakfast with Frost on December 3rd European Commissioner and former Conservative party chairman Chris Patten said he agreed with comments made by Kenneth Clarke and Michael Portillo that the Conservative party had to be more inclusive and not constrain intself to a narrow band of supporters. He said , " We have got to be a broad church, not a narrow sect. "

Also on the programme the peace negotiator in Northern Ireland leading up to the Good Friday agreement, Senator George Mitchell spoke of the new commission which he is heading trying to resolve the current crisis in the Middle East. He said he and fellow commission members would be going to the region soon and meeting with leaders on all sides. After the murder of Damilola Taylor in Peckham this week, the local MP Harriet Harman and the Bishop of Southwark Rt. Rev. Thomas Butler spoke of the great shock in the community and moves being made to improve living standards on the estate where the 10-year-old boy died.
