World summit
You could do more to save the planet's resources
Improving people's lives and conserving our natural resources are two of the lofty aims of the World Summit on Sustainable Development, which is being held in South Africa.

But its critics have already warned that the Summit could end up being just a talking shop. Breakfast's Jane O'Brien is in Fife .

  • Breakfast's Jane O'Brien is in Fife, in Scotland and will be to looking at how the issues affect people in the UK. From 0700 BST

  • You can also take part in our interactive quiz to measure YOUR impact on the planet

  • And there are some suggestions for what you can do to help save the planet

  • 20 Ways that you can make a difference

In Fife Jane O'Brien has been looking at unsustainable development, what happens when the environment is ignored by industry.

The people of Westfield have put up with opencast mining for decades.

The closure of the pit has left them with the deepest manmade hole in Europe, a high incidence of asthma and a large area of wasteland.

And now there are plans for a recycling centre and landfill which the residents don't want either.

Jane also went to meet children at Dunino primary school whose conservation, recycling and energy saving has won them a major European environment award for the third year

And Jane went to visit a recycling project in Fife that collects newspaper from homes in Fife.

It's run in conjunction with the local council and the UK's largest integrated paper bag producer.
