| Thursday, 6 February, 2003, 12:28 GMT House Price Boom ![]() House Price Boom: 4x4 Reports was on BBC One on Monday 11 November at 1930 GMT. Boom or bust? Back in 1988 economist Steven Bell was the first to predict that the 80s housing boom would collapse. Now he tells John Stapleton that it is about to happen again, claiming that house prices in London will fall by 10% over the next year, and then drop as much as 20% in the years following. He explains why he has reached that conclusion while other pundits are saying prices will rise. We show how the confusion about the direction prices are heading is encouraging some people to cash in and sell up, while others continue to invest a fortune in buy to let property. Foot on the ladder Getting a foot on the property ladder is the hardest it has ever been with the average price of a house higher than ever at 116,000. Max Flint follows couples trying to buy their first home and checks out what is on offer to them. We find out how deep in debt they may have to go to get a roof over their head. Millionaire's row The top end of the housing market has out performed all the rest. Vanessa Collingridge follows one lottery winner searching for his dream home and finds that 1m does not necessarily go a long way. She also explores the other factors fuelling the luxury house price boom and meets a company director who has invested his 1m bonus into buying and leasing out country houses. We discover a super rich building spree that is producing huge mansions up and down the country. The Big Sell The only thing rising as fast as house prices is the increasing number of complaints against estate agents. As the Office of Fair Trade begins an inquiry looking at reforming the estate agent industry, Sangita Myska meets Somerset estate agent Julian Bending. He says he is a rarity in the business - an honest estate agent. He never pulls any punches about the properties he sells, describing their minuses as well as their pluses. It is a tactic that pays off. He also gives the low down on some of the tricks of the trade. |
