US criticised for damage to Babylon

The UN cultural agency, Unesco, has said US troops in Iraq caused considerable damage to the ancient site of Babylon by using it as a military base after the 2003 invasion.

The report says key structures were harmed and the site was subjected to "digging, cutting and levelling".

However UN cultural officials stress the damage did not begin when the Americans arrived, or end when they left.
