The new US envoy for the Middle East, George Mitchell, is on his first official visit to Israel, a day after Israeli forces clashed with Palestinian militants in Gaza.
Earlier he held talks with the Egyptian President , Hosni Mubarak.
Mr Mitchell told a news conference in Cairo it was important that the fragile Gaza ceasefire be "extended and consolidated."
