The UN Security Council has adopted a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza followed by a full Israeli withdrawal.
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Washington supported the text and explained why the US, which is Israel's staunchest ally, unexpectedly abstained from the vote.
