Ban Ki-moon: Ceasefire must be declared

The United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, has condemned Israel's "excessive use of force" in its air offensive in the Gaza Strip, and has repeated his call for an an immediate ceasefire.

Mr Ban said that, while he recognised Israel's right to defend itself against Hamas militant attacks, the current suffering saddened him profoundly.
