US singer Katy Perry opened the 2008 MTV Europe Awards astride a gigantic cherry chapstick. The prop was a nod to her hit single, I Kissed A Girl. An arresting light and video installation brought the Killers' latest single, Human, to life. Take That put on an impassioned performance, despite nearly being drowned out by screaming fans. Beyonce, sporting a futuristic dress and a silver "cyber-glove" performed her new single If I Were A Boy. "In the universe of rock 'n' roll bands, the Beatles were the big bang," Bono said as he presented Sir Paul McCartney with the Ultimate Legend award. Britney Spears won two prizes - best act of 2008 and best album for Breakout. The pop star sent an acceptance speech from the set of her new video, Circus. London-born R&B star Estelle duetted with Kanye West on the number one hit American Boy. The song was accompanied by video screen images of Barack Obama. Pink, who won the most memorable track award, received the warmest reception of the night as she sang So What while negotiating a large-scale pillow fight. Electro-pop group The Ting Tings gave a stripped back performance of their smash hit That's Not My Name. Kid Rock was the only rock performer of the night - and got the crowd on its feet with his tribute to Sweet Home Alabama, All Summer Long. Katy Perry had a total of 12 outfits during the ceremony, including a dress made out of a carousel and a sequinned Barack Obama t-shirt. She closed the show dressed as both a bride and groom as she belted out her most recent top 40 hit, Hot 'N' Cold.
