Lindsay Roy gives the thumbs up after winning the Glenrothes by-election for Labour. Counting got under way after the polls closed, with the first box arriving shortly after 2200 GMT on Thursday. SNP Candidate Peter Grant, leader of Fife Council, took some comfort in his party's increased vote, despite coming second. Voter turnout in the by-election was 52.34%, slightly down on the 2005 election, which stood at 56.14%.
