US singer and composer Isaac Hayes, who died on Sunday aged 65, started his career in the 1960s at Stax Records. He achieved fame with his album Hot Buttered Soul in 1969. In 1971, he wrote the theme song for the film Shaft, about a tough private detective in New York City. He won an Oscar for Shaft, one of a series of awards, and went on to write music for a number of movies and TV shows. As well as composing, he continued to perform - here at the 2002 Glastonbury Festival. He set up the Isaac Hayes Foundation in 1993 and worked to promote education He won popularity with a new generation when he became the voice of Chef in the cartoon series South Park Hayes fathered 12 children, including son Nana Kwadjo in 2006 with his fourth wife Adjowa. 'At the end of the day," said Hayes, "we are responsible for our own lives. Once you learn that, you're on your way."
