In pictures: G8 protests

More than 1,000 activists from around the world have marched ahead of the opening of the summit of leaders from the world's Group of Eight (G8) developed nations in Japan.

The protesters called on G8 leaders to make a greater commitment to tackle climate change and poverty and to take actions against rising food prices.

Students, trade unionists and farmers were among those taking part, many of whom blame globalisation for increasing poverty and the dependence on fossil fuels.

Police have prevented the protests from reaching the remote lakeside resort where the leaders will be meeting, on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido.

Previous protests at G8 summits have been marred by outbreaks of violence.

The police presence is heavy, with the security budget said to be more than $280m (�140m).

At least two people have been arrested. Further protests are expected to be held throughout the summit, which opens on Monday.
