Dundee band The View have come a long way since they were discovered by Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty. Maps is James Chapman. He was nominated for his album We Can Create, which he put together from his Northampton bedroom. The Mercury judges described Fionn Regan (second left) as a "modern day Irish troubadour" with "moving songs beautifully played and sung". Rapper Dizzee Rascal previously won the award in 2003. He was shortlisted again for his album Maths and English. This year's jazz entry was the classically trained quintet Basquiat Strings who teamed up with Seb Rochford, (third right) the drummer with Polar Bear.
