Jane Tomlinson, who completed a series of gruelling physical challenges to raise more than 1.5m for charity while suffering terminal breast cancer, has died. As well as Great North Runs in Newcastle she completed marathons in London and New York. One of her biggest challenges was completing the UK Half Ironman triathlon competition in 2003. As well as bike rides along the length of the British mainland and 2,500 miles from Rome to Leeds, she also rode 4,200 miles across the US. Her husband Mike and son Steven joined her as she travelled through Washington during the 2006 ride. Mrs Tomlinson won many accolades for her inspirational achievements including the Helen Rollason award at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards in 2002. She was also honoured by becoming an MBE in June 2003 for her work and then made a CBE in June this year. After the US bike ride, Mrs Tomlinson was too ill to continue her challenges but she organised a 10km through Leeds in June, an event her family hope to continue in her memory.
