Protesters and police have clashed in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka during the second day of a nationwide transport blockade. Street vendors' stalls have been set on fire and riot police drafted in. An alliance of political parties has taken to the streets to try to prevent elections scheduled for later in January from taking place. On Sunday, a large demonstration in Dhaka turned violent as police attempted to disperse thousands of stone-throwing protesters. Riot police fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the protesters. The situation in Dhaka continues to be tense. The Awami League and its allies plan to boycott the 22 January elections, saying they will not be free and fair. The protesters say many people have been missed off the electoral roll, but the interim government says the elections must go ahead.
