Fans were treated to scorching weather at the Benicassim music festival, just outside the Spanish resort town of the same name.

Thousands of British festivalgoers were among the revellers at Benicassim, with most travelling on cheap flights to Valencia or Barcelona.

Franz Ferdinand, The Pixies and Depeche Mode were among the headliners. The main stage area did not open until 2000, when eager fans ran to the front.

The music did not get into full swing until the evening - leaving fans to enjoy the beach in the daytime.

Some took advantage of shady spots to catch up on sleep after enjoying music late into the night.

Water-spraying fans were also set up in the festival arena to give attendees respite from the heat.

Festivalgoers pitched their tents in three main camping areas spread across the town.

The tent that housed the second stage sprayed fans with water to keep them cool.

Thousands of people without tickets watched the main stage action from a hill behind the arena - with drinks served at a makeshift bar.
