The cast of Superman Returns attended the film's US premiere in Los Angeles with director Bryan Singer (right).

Brandon Routh, who plays the titular superhero, was joined by girlfriend Courtney Ford. "He kind of personifies everything that people want in their Superman," said co-star Spacey.

Actress Kate Bosworth is cast as reporter Lois Lane. The film reunites her with Beyond the Sea co-star Kevin Spacey.

Kevin Spacey turned up with his hair intact even though his character, Lex Luthor, is completely bald. Spacey credits director Singer with reviving the superhero franchise.

Director Bryan Singer receieved a passionate thank-you from Frank Langella, who plays Perry White in the film.

"I see more of the Clark Kent qualities in him," said Kate Bosworth of her co-star Routh. The actress, 23, signed autographs with fans outside the cinema.

Actor Jack Larson spruced up his suit with a Superman tie as he accompanied actress Noel Neill to the premiere.

Dean Cain, who played Superman on TV in the 1990s opposite Desperate Housewives' Teri Hatcher, also made an appearance.

Athlete Shaquille O'Neal paid tribute to Christopher Reeve. "He actually called me Superman when I first met him," he said.

Actresses Roseanne Barr and Anna Paquin were among the celebrity guests at the premiere.
