Barry Greatorex, the thirteenth confirmed case of swine flu in the UK, said people should not panic about the spread of the virus.
He said his family, who have been given the anti-viral drug Tamiflu, have not shown any signs of illness.
Mr Greatorex, who spoke to the BBC's Jules Hyam from his home in Chipping Sodbury, South Gloucestershire, said he believed he had caught the virus from a colleague who had returned from Mexico.
