Inmates could be released early
La Moye Prison
La Moye: Prisoners will be supervised after release
Prisoners could be released early from La Moye jail in Jersey under new proposals by the States.

The Home Affairs Committee wants offenders to be eligible for parole half way through their sentence instead of the current two thirds.

The committee believes criminals will be less likely to re-offend if they spend half their sentences under supervision in the community

The jail, which has 183 inmates, is overcrowded, says its governor.

But Steve Guy-Gibbons said the plans were not designed with that in mind.

He said: "The reason we need them released early is not because they're out of the prison, although that will help, but it's hoped that they get supervised.

"That's why we are focusing on it, not to get extra space in prison."
