La Moye has been criticised by inspectors in the past

The team of inspectors from the UK are spending a week looking at the running of the jail and conditions for inmates.

The prison is checked every few years by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Prisons at the request of the Home Affairs Committee.

General inspectors are joined by experts who make recommendations on issues at the island prison such as health and education.

Following the last inspection in 2001, 147 recommendations were made for improvements, but almost two thirds have still not been taken up.

Governor Steven Gibbens is concerned about overcrowding, a lack of staff and poor conditions for inmates.
