There are currently 183 inmates held at La Moye |
Jersey's prison governor has admitted a new wing designed for 40 inmates will have to accommodate 60 male prisoners. Steven Guy Gibbens admits he has had to compromise over numbers, but insists conditions will still be better than in older parts of La Moye.
Since being appointed governor, Mr Gibbens has emphasised the need to improve conditions for those inside.
He says more money is needed for extra staff and new programmes to rehabilitate and prevent re-offending.
But with growing prisoner numbers the new block, which is due to open next summer, will have to hold 50% more inmates than originally intended.
La Moye currently has 183 inmates aged between 15 and 70-years-old.
