Surge in island's power charges
The costs of electricity is to go up by almost 10%. Jersey islanders can expect to pay more for their power from the start of 2006.

Jersey Electricity says the average bill will increase by 1 per week. A similar increase will follow in 2007.

The company says the cost of electricity, which is imported from Europe, has gone up by 55%.

The States owns 62% of the company. Its three-year fixed-price contract with Electricite de France ends in December.

The company says it will hold the prices at their present level until 1 January 2006, and then limit the price increase to 9.7%.

It claims there will be no further price increases next year, despite the instability in energy costs across the world.
