Party allows independent members
A political party in Jersey has announced its members will be standing as independents in the future.

The Centre Party said it will no longer force members to follow a party line.

It decided at a council meeting that elected members would be free to vote according to their conscience and there will be no party whip.

The party said it recognised the Jersey electorate prefers to vote for individuals and all candidates remain committed to membership of the party.

It believes it will result in a more favourable outcome in the 2008 senatorial elections.

The party said it was ambitious to try to introduce party politics overnight.
