Sealife centre planned for pier
Jersey
Jersey's coastline: Haven for wildlife
The harbour terminal on Jersey's Gorey pier is to be turned into a 50,000 sealife centre.

After a two-year search for a suitable site, the Environment Department will share the passenger building with the harbour authorities.

Visitors will be able to learn about the island's coastline, its sealife and the internationally important Ramsar site on the south east coast.

The building will still be used by ferry passengers during the summer.

There are also plans for a viewing platform over the Royal Bay of Grouville, Seymour Tower and the French Coast.

The design is being paid for with 10,000 from the Tourism Development Fund and the rest will come from States funding agreed years ago.

The centre is due to open in mid May.

Jersey is one of 113 countries signed up to the United Nations Ramsar Convention, which aims to protect wetlands of international ecological importance.
