Islands feature in Nazi programme
Auschwitz
Hundreds of Channel Islanders were sent to camps across Europe
The Channel Islands are featured in a documentary about Auschwitz on television on Tuesday evening.

Auschwitz: The Nazis and the 'Final Solution' is being shown to mark the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz in 1945.

The Channel Islands, invaded in June, 1940, were the only British Territory to be occupied during the war.

Three Jewish woman from Guernsey were among more than one million people who died at Auschwitz.

Deportation

Six million Jews were killed by the Nazis during World War II.

Twenty-two Jersey people died in other prisons and concentration camps and many hundreds of others were sent to camps across Europe.

In the third programme of a six-part series, the Factories of Death looks at the British experience of the holocaust.

On 28 June 1940, the Germans bombed St. Helier harbour and La Rocque.

Once the Germans knew the islands were undefended, they immediately occupied them.

Islanders had to show their willingness to comply with the Germans by flying white flags from all buildings.

The Germans took over the government and the courts, and new laws began to be passed - a register of the island's Jews would be created, and all Jewish businesses had to display a yellow notice.

In September 1942, it was announced that all British-born islanders would be deported to Germany - 1,200 people in all.

The liberation of the Channel Islands came when two Royal Navy destroyers arrived 8 May, 1945, and a declaration of unconditional surrender was signed the following day.

The occupied Channel Islands became involved in the deportation of Jews, including the three Jewish woman in Guernsey who were handed over by police to the German authorities. The women sent to Auschwitz, 900 miles away, were murdered.
