It is hoped to have a parade of veterans through St Helier |
War veterans in Jersey have decided not to celebrate the end of World War II on the day chosen by the UK government. In Britain there are plans to mark the 60th anniversary on 10 July, which falls between VE Day on 8 May and VJ Day on 14 August.
But in Jersey, the island celebrates VE day on 9 May, the day the island was liberated from Nazi Occupation in 1945.
And veterans say they are planning to mark the ending of World War II on VJ Day with a concert and parades.
Owen Wiscombe, Her Majesty's Forces support and welfare officer for the Channel Islands, says the date of 10 July is not at all popular with Jersey's World War II veterans.
Events for the celebrations are still at the planning stage, but it is hoped they will include a concert in Royal Square in the afternoon of 14 August and end with a grand parade of veterans and other uniformed organisations through the streets of St Helier.
