Tenants could face 60 rent rise
Tenants in Guernsey could face a 60 rent rise under housing officials' biggest rents and rebates review yet of the States' 2,100 properties.

If proposals are approved later this month, a three-bedroomed house would attract a rental of 137 a week.

The Housing Committee wants to balance and maintain rents at an "appropriate" level for householders.

Last year a Green Paper gauged opinions of politicians and tenants on realistic rents.

Helpline numbers

Housing Minister Deputy Dave Jones, said: "It is the first review for 30 years and because of that rents are artificially low and no longer produce the kind of revenue that Housing needs to carry out its repairs.

"Increases for the highest earning tenants will be spread over three years, so no single increase over those years will be more than 20.

"Fifty five per cent of tenants will get a decrease in rents because social housing should be aimed at the poorest in the community."

He said every tenant would be able to apply for a rebate and he expected 90% of tenants to do so.

Christine Le Jean of the State Tenants Action Group, said: "I feel that there are a lot of anomalies in it that tenants have to look at."

The Housing team will be on hand to answer tenants' questions between 0830GMT and 1300GMT on Saturday.

The numbers to call are 717318 and 717319.
