Cheap bus travel to be tackled

Teenagers are attempting to set up a new youth council
Cheap bus travel for young people and grants for university tuition fees will be among the first issues tackled by Jersey's new youth council.

In May 2004, eighteen 13 to 19-year-olds got together to talk about a new body to represent the interests of the island's young people.

Now a committee has been formed to make the idea a reality.

The committee also hopes three forums can be set up - for the west and east of the island as well as St Helier.

The interim committee is headed by Julianne Dix, a 17-year-old student from Hautlieu.

Sheilagh Mason: Believed in a better future for young people
She says the future of the Waterfront skate park will be on the agenda when the youth council comes to fruition.

It also wants to put together an event at the island's Arts Centre in memory of the Jersey youth worker Sheilagh Mason.

Mrs Mason was on holiday in Ireland with her husband Kevin when she had a stroke at the age of 54.

She was highly regarded by and well loved by the young people of Jersey.

The youth worker believed that young people should have a voice and should be encouraged to take responsibility and participate in every aspect of island life.

Mrs Mason started working for the Jersey Youth Service as a youth worker at Le Squez in 1992 when she came to the island with her family.
