States' free parking scrutinised
Parked cars
The Privileges Committee says politicians should pay for parking
A review of parking for Jersey's States workers has been recommended as part of plans to abolish free parking for island politicians.

The Privileges and Procedures Committee is supporting an attempt to scrap the perk for States members.

Senator Ted Vibert has asked the States to agree that politicians should not be able to park for free.

He argues that the perk dates back to a time when politicians were not paid and could claim expenses.

The committee says States members should pay to park, but that there must be a dedicated and secure car park where they are guaranteed a space when they are on official States business.

It says that if and when States members' free parking is scrapped, there should be a review of free parking for States civil servants too.
