The States of Guernsey already has a guillotine motion |
States debates in Jersey could be cut short in future if plans are approved. The Privileges and Procedures Committee - responsible for the way the States works - wants to save time.
Under the proposals, if a debate has been going on for an hour with no real progress, a member can ask for it to be cut short.
If the house agrees, then it will vote straight away on the matter under debate. Guernsey States uses a similar system called a guillotine motion.
Extra sitting
Deputy Roy Le Herissier, who leads the committee responsible for the workings of government, said it would save a lot of time.
"There have been constant complaints about the repetition and long-winded nature of States debates.
"We are bringing in a mechanism to try and control it, but it will be entirely in the hands of the members. It will not be imposed from on high.
"They will take a decision on when to cut a debate."
The States had to have another extra sitting this week, because not all the business on the previous agenda had been finished.
