Union leaders to discuss job cuts
Office
The union says it wants more information before agreeing a deal
Union leaders in Jersey are due to meet politicians to discuss plans to cut 300 public sector jobs.

Senator Frank Walker will speak to the Transport and General Workers' Union as they try to work out a compromise over the cuts.

The union has been sceptical about the plans for jobs losses.

It is worried people could be forced to accept different pay and conditions, and that some States work could be carried out by private companies.

Discuss situation

Senator Walker recently wrote to Jersey's TGWU leader Nick Corbel.

He promised that if the union got involved in working out how the jobs could be cut, then no-one would lose their jobs involuntarily.

Mr Corbel welcomed that in principle, but said he wanted a lot more information before committing to any deal.

The two sides are due to meet on Wednesday, after which Mr Corbel will discuss the situation with other representatives before making any decisions.
