Risk to pensions if jobs are cut
People in Jersey with a public sector pension could lose out if plans to cut jobs go ahead.

The claim has been made by TGWU leader Nick Corbel.

He said that plans by the States to cut 500 jobs will lead to a bigger deficit in the public employees' contributory retirement scheme.

The TGWU has been invited to join discussions on cutting jobs by Senator Frank Walker in return for a promise of no compulsory redundancies.

Nick Corbel has welcomed the guarantee but said the union needs more details before it could commit to a formal partnership.

He said: "I think it's obvious to anyone who cares to look at it that the public sector scheme, if you do reduce numbers by 500, it's obviously going to have an affect on the scheme."

Earlier this year, valuers of the States pension scheme identified it already faced an 80m shortfall. The TGWU's regional secretary, Andy Frampton, will address a meeting at Fort Regent next Tuesday.
