Residents 'support' permit scheme

Residents will have to pay 300 a year for a parking permit
Residents in part of Jersey are happy to pay 300 a year to park in marked spaces, according to a politician.

A trial parking scheme in the Stopford Road area of St Helier has been made permanent and there are plans to introduce it elsewhere in the town.

Environment and Public Services president Senator Philip Ozouf said most people who responded to a survey were satisfied with the scheme.

But he said there was some opposition to the cost of a parking permit.

Higher demand

He said the fee covered the cost of running the scheme.

Senator Ozouf said: "As we move into other areas of St Helier we are going to have more difficulties.

"There is a much higher demand for spaces than we have places marked on the road.

"I don't think we can conceive of having different fees for different parts of St Helier.

"We really need to keep it simple."
