Police launch parking crackdown
Double yellow lines generic
Motorists have been parking on double yellow lines in Cheapside
People who park on yellow lines in the Cheapside area of Jersey are facing tougher penalties under a new scheme.

The Parking Control Department wants to stop drivers parking and waiting illegally in the busy street.

It describes Cheapside as a "notoriously busy part of the ring road".

It says illegal parking and waiting in the street is unacceptable and dangerous for drivers and pedestrians.

Towed away

The police and the department are to step up patrols in the area and, from next month, they will put traffic cones along both sides of the road.

People who move them will be charged 100 - an increase of 40 on the current fine.

If they park illegally, or half-on, half-off the pavement, their cars will be towed away and they will have to pay the towing charge.

People who run businesses in Cheapside are being told to arrange their deliveries before 0800 GMT or after 1800 GMT each day.

Meanwhile, the police are also planning to step up patrols outside Jersey schools to stop parents parking on yellow lines while they drop off and collect their children.
