Flat fire mother thanks neighbour
Fire engine
It is thought the fire started in the bedroom of the flat
A mother has paid tribute to the neighbour who raised the alarm after spotting a blaze in her home.

The fire started at about 0530 BST on Sunday morning at a flat in Lord Coutanche Court, Jersey.

Their neighbour called the fire service and knocked on the family's door to wake them up.

Six people were inside the flat at the time. A man in his 20s is being treated in hospital in the UK for fourth degree burns on his upper body and face.

I feel lucky to be alive. Everything in the flat can be replaced, but lives can never be replaced
Michelle Borehan

The cause of the fire is not yet known, but Jersey Fire Service says it is thought to have started in his bedroom.

The six occupants included three boys aged between nine and 13, their mother, her partner and his son, who was taken to the UK.

The young man was rescued by his father after he was found collapsed behind his bedroom door.

His father was also treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. Smoke alarms

Michelle Borehan, the mother of the three children, said that without the neighbour, her family may not have got out.

She said: "I feel lucky to be alive. Everything in the flat can be replaced, but lives can never be replaced.

"We've got our neighbour to thank that we're all still here.

"She saved our lives and I'll never, ever be able to replay her for that."

Jersey's Fire and Rescue Service is warning people about the importance of having working smoke alarms in their homes.
