A scheme to prevent re-offending in Jersey using electronic tagging has been hailed a success. Only one prisoner selected for early release on the prisoner tagging scheme has re-offended since it was introduced in May of last year.
The information comes from the island's recently published Probation Service Annual Report.
Members of the public sitting on a panel decide which offenders should be selected.
In its 15 months of operation, only one person has re-offended and the scheme is estimated to have saved the Prison Service around �180,000.
The 2003 report also notes the success of a behavioural course at Highlands College for people with a high risk of re-offending.
But it expresses concern that plans for a permanent probation officer at the prison and supervision for released prisons was not given funding.
