Builders did not consult historical experts on their work |
Restoration work at a Jersey fountain is being dismantled on the orders of the committee responsible for carrying it out. The Public Services Department's work on the fountain in the Central Market was carried out to give it a face lift.
A small wall with traditional granite cladding around its base was built, but historical experts objected, saying the work was not authentic.
Public Services Committee Deputy Jaqui Hilton has ruled it must be taken down.
'Extremely unhappy'
Deputy Hilton said had given the Public Services Department a "stiff talking to" about botched work to renovate the fountain.
She said she was very unhappy the department began work without consulting the Planning Committee or local historical experts.
She said: "It is regrettable, I admit that, and I'm extremely unhappy about it.
"But I think the message has been put across very firmly that these mistakes will not be repeated again."
The fountain is to be restored to resemble how it was when first built.
