Three hundred jobs could be cut from Jersey's public sector within the next five years. Plans have been put forward to change the way the civil service operates and save 20m a year.
The government has been criticised for being inefficient and slow to change and now a group of senior civil servants is planning radical changes.
Bill Ogley, the head of the civil service, said it was time to improve the States' image and staff morale.
The plans include better contact with the public and a new culture of operating more efficiently - but up to 300 jobs could go over the next five years.
Senator Frank Walker, Policy and Resources President, says it can be achieved painlessly.
He said that all States employees have been sent a letter explaining the changes and that the majority of job cuts would occur as people retire or take redundancy.
