Island signs up with gas safety body

A new scheme has begun to protect people in Jersey from badly fitted or dangerous gas appliances.

Island gas installers are now included on a register compiled by the UK Council of Registered Gas Installers (CORGI).

CORGI's registration scheme has been extended to the Channel Islands at the request of the islands' Health and Safety Executive.

It is voluntary, but could, in time, become law for island gas fitters to register to continue trading.

It means homeowners in Jersey will know that if their tradesperson has been registered and assessed by CORGI.

In the UK, it is the law to be CORGI-registered and a recent study showed 93% of work done by non-registered installers had serious defects.
