Substation to meet power needs

The station marks the end of a 100m investment programme
It is claimed Jersey's power supply system is now big enough to deal with the growing demand for it on the island.

It comes after the completion of a 4m electricity substation built at Rue Des Pres in St Saviour by Jersey Electricity to provide power for people living in the east of the island.

The substation took more than a year to design and build and is deemed to be the quietest plant available, inside a metal-clad building.

Peter Snape, Jersey Electricity's project manager, said it brought to an end a 10-year, 100m investment in electricity infrastructure by the company to ensure it can deal with the increasing demand for power.

He said the substation was the first of its kind because it could transform power in one step, therefore reducing the space it required and the cost needed to run it.

He said the company was confident the island's power supply system was now big enough and fit enough to meet ongoing high growth in electricity demand.
