Sustainable energy call by senator
Electricity pylon
People are asking about the impact of energy production
A Jersey senator has said the island should employ UK experts to find out how to generate sustainable energy.

Senator Paul le Claire says the island should follow the UK's lead with cleaner alternatives to make its electricity.

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair this week announced plans to try and clean up the UK's energy system, with the aim of cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 60% in the next 50 years.

Senator le Claire said it is an important issue which should be addressed now to benefit future generations.

Environmental impact

Senator le Claire said: "Tidal flows around the Channel Islands are so great.

"I think we could do well in Jersey to initiate some kind of a system around Jersey and working with the other Channel Islands."

The Jersey Electricity Company said: "Today there is an increasing awareness of the effects of energy use. People are asking more about the impact on both local and global environment.

"We seek a responsible balance between the costs and benefits of environmental excellence in the design and operation of our electricity supply system."
